Instruction Beginner


The new Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program is designed to provide valuable and accessible resources and training to instructors who are working with children aged 10 to 16 years old in an instruction/lesson format. Instructors can be trained and certified in 5 different specialties (hitting, pitching&catching, infielding, outfielding and baserunning)

The program is comprised of four parts:

  • Baseball Canada's On-line Module - a complete resource to help get you started and a place to revisit often while you instruct youth baseball;
  • Teaching and Learning Clinic - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers organization, explanations, demonstrations, supervision and feedbacks;
  • Skills Analysis Clinic - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers the basics of error detection and correction for basic baseball skills;

One of more of the following:

  • Pitching & Catching Clinic - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class or gym/field clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers basic pitching mechanics as well as fundamentals for catchers.
  • Hitting - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class or gym/field clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers basic hitting mechanics.
  • Infielding - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class or gym/field clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers basic infielding mechanics.
  • Outfielding - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class or gym/field clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers basic outfielding mechanics.
  • Baserunning - a Provincial/local 4-5 hour, in-class or gym/field clinic that you can attend only after completing the On-line Module. The clinic covers basic baserunning mechanics.

Each part of the program provides credits towards your status as a Baseball Instructor Beginner in one or more specialties.

Baseball Canada On-line Module

On completion of this module, you will get credit for:

  • Select pre-designed practice plans that show flexibility for number of children, helpers, space and equipment.

Teaching and Learning Clinic and Skills Analysis

On completion of these modules, you will get credit for:

  • Ensure that the practice environment is safe.
  • Implement an appropriately structured and organized practice. Make interventions that promote learning.
  • Apply an ethical decision making process.
  • Detect Performance (in specialty chosen)
  • Correct Performance (in specialty chosen)

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be In Training.

Pitching & Catching Clinic

On completion of this module, you will get credit for:

  • Detect and correct fundamental pitching performance.
  • Detect and correct fundamental catching performance.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Trained.

Hitting Clinic

On completion of this module, you will get credit for:

  • Detect and correct fundamental hitting performance.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Trained.

Infielding Clinic

On completion of this module, you will get credit for:

  • Detect and correct fundamental infielding performance.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Trained.

Outfielding Clinic

On completion of this module, you will get credit for:

  • Detect and correct fundamental outfielding performance.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Trained.

Baserunning Clinic

On completion of this module, you will get credit for:

  • Detect and correct fundamental baserunning performance.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Trained.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Trained ‘Specialty’ Instructor Beginner once the Online Module, Teaching & Learning Clinic, Skills Analysis Clinic and one specialty module are completed.

Your coaching status in the Baseball Canada Instructor Beginner program will be Certified ‘Specialty’ Instructor Beginner once the Making Ethical Decision Online Evaluation is completed as well as completing your online portfolio and be evaluated during a lesson. Note that online portfolio and lesson observation are different from one specialty to another.

As you progress through the program, you will receive a National Coaching Certification Program coaching card that indicates your status in the program.
